Sukinda Chromite valley has 93% of total resources in India and currently 100% ore production of India is coming from this Sukinda valley. Ferro Alloys Corporation Ltd. (FACOR) contributes 8% of Indian chrome ore production.
Chromite deposit in Sukinda Valley is the richest deposit in India covering about 40 square kilometres was discovered in Jajpur District. FACOR has 2 open pit running mines and 1 underground mines in the Odisha state.
The Ostapal Chromite Mines and Kalarangiatta Chromite Mines are spread over an area of 72.843 Hectares and 23.800 Hectares respectively, over the Sukinda Valley in the Jajpur District of Odisha and both are currently in operation. The Kathpal Chromite Mines, FACOR is spread over an area of 113.312 Hectares in the Dhenkanal District of Odisha. This mine is currently not in operation. The company requires to mine out chromite to feed its Charge Chrome Plant, at Randia, District- Bhadrak, Odisha to produce better quality of Ferro Chrome/Charge Chrome.
Operational Excellence Overview
- Mining Operations with high mechanisation aid including highly flexible backhoe excavator – dumper combination systems along with efficient payloaders and graders.
- Current Mine logistics are aided with AFDSS (Automatic Fire Detection and Suppression System), machinery with rigid mobility, safety indicators, fire extinguishers, sensors for 3600 movement of vehicle and cameras.
- Machinery Equipment and logistic aids are equipped with carbon emission control systems and operate on efficient diesel consumption mechanism.
- Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP) assists in hazardous waste removal with all pollution parameter considerations, through treating water from a highly functioning open pit mine dewatering channel circuit at Ostapal Chromite Mines.
- Use of Geo-Textiles and Silpaulin (strong resistant waterproof material) for Dump Slope for better stabilisation and facilitating operational management.
- Safe, efficient and proper transportation and handling of hazardous waste from the mines.
- All mining activities and pollution prevention mitigation measures undertaken as per the stipulated guidelines of various governing agencies in very scientific and systematic manner.
- Afforestation – Plantation of multifarious local species has increased the green density in the surrounding landscape
- Health, Safety and Environment programs initiated daily and trainings for all employees and partners regarding safety (Daily Toolbox Talks conducted in Ostapal Chromite Mines).
- All mine planning estimations and geo-monitoring is carried using GEOVIA Surpac Software along with AUTOCAD and ground control radar monitoring shall also be functioning for the mines soon.
Ferro Alloys Corporation Ltd.(FACOR) has engaged highly competent and long experienced technical staff including Mining Engineers & Geologists to supervise the systematic exploration carried out in the mine for estimation of reserve, to carry out mining in safe & scientific manner, to ensure conservation of minerals, health & safety of workers and protection of environment.
